If you want to extend his contract, you're going to have to pay him like a top safety. Theres no other contract that a player is going to agree to. He's not going to want 2002 money.
When Taylor actually outplays his rookie deal, which admittedly wasn't that good, then I think the Skins should compensate him accordingly. But if he's going to be a safety who can't cover (Sean Taylor ranked 68th vs the pass among eligible safeties...Arch ranked 66th), he doesn't deserve to be paid like one.
Full disclosure: Sean Taylor was excellent vs the run in 2006, but this might have been part of the problem. To be able to average 6.0 yards per running play against as a safety, you have to be really, really agressive in attacking the LOS, and if ST was really aggressive at the LOS, its not surprising that he was terrible over the top.
