But yes, to answer the question, you CAN deactivate a player, but it is not a long term thing. Players are activated and deactivated on a week by week basis.

The teams roster number is always set at 53. But teams are only allowed a maximum of 45 players on the active game day roster. So there are always 8 players that are inactive for any given Sunday. Coaches shuffle players to and from the active game day roster to the inactive roster as they see fit.

Oh yeah, Lloyd could cry to the Union all he wants, whether or not he is active for a Sunday game is purely the coaches decision and the Union cannot interfere with that. The union is there to protect the players rights and make sure he gets paid what he and the team agreed to. The Union cannot dicatate to an organization the 45 man game day roster. As long as Lloyd is getting paid, the union stays away.
