Re: No Cap Hell For Us

Part of the cap system includes a provision that if you load contracts with incentives that have to be earned and the player does not earn them than you get the unpaid amount back as a credit to your cap. A lot of the cunning teams use this to protect themselves against players who don't produce and to also aid them in managing their cap. Imagine if instead of the Redskins just giving Brandon Llyod a $10 million bonus largely related to signing/roster bonuses and instead weighed it more heavily on incentives that had to be earned? With his obvious lack of production the Skins could have just cut their losses with him, not had to pay him all the money they already have, and in addition get his unearned incentives back as credits on their cap - that would have been smart cap management - not just signing away a huge check on a wing and a prayer. If a player does not have enough confidence that he can reach some of those incentives than let anothter team take a chance on him.

So yes Synder can simply throw more money at the problem but why not use the incentive credit provision to your advantage and increase your cap?

Also I beleive Schneed pointed out that you do have to look out for your future somewhat and cannot redo everyone's contract because as you redo a contract you are pushing more dead money onto the cap of future years when you finally do release the player.
