Portis is a great runner, but I wouldn't compare him to the master, Barry Sanders!
As far as trading down for more picks. I'd agree with you if Taylor wasn't such an incrediable player. If he's off the board, deal down. If he's there, we'd be absolutly crazy not to take him, especially with the hit our secondary is going to take!
