Just in the last few years, the Giants have drafted Matias Kiwanuka, Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield, and Osi Umenyiora to bolster an already strong D-line that had Michael Strahan and Fred Robbins. Unless we can find bargain free agents the way the Giants did with Antonio Pierce or the Patriots did with numerous guys such as Welker and Vrabel, I'd just as soon stay out of the high stakes bidding.

I know a lot of us share that sentiment. While I don't want Canty in DC, I think he would be a pretty good & affordable pickup if he were an unrestricted FA. I certainly wouldn't consider him a big name free agent.
Ideally, guys like Canty - decent but not spectacular - are the best value in free agency; they can start immediately but not break the bank. I think that's the prudent way of spending in free agency & is what we did this past offseason signing Smoot & Fletcher. I look forward to seeing a greater commitment to the draft, but they'll always sign a couple of players in free agency.
