Demetrius was born to a 13-year-old girl named Gloria Bell in 1984. Gloria and Karl Malone met while Malone was a sophomore in college. Karl and his son have been estranged for all of the young boy's life. Once they were finally acquainted when Demetrius was 18, Karl told Demetrius that it is too late to be his dad and that he would have to make his own fortune.[4]
Malone also fathered twins while in high school. Both Karl and Rita Ford were 17 years old when Daryl and WNBA star Cheryl Ford were born. It took years to claim the twins, and now he and his wife, Kay, fully accept them as part of their family along with their four other children.[4
