It was an annual diving operation. There are hundreds of underwater cables in the Bering Sea and the ice flows in the winter will tend to crush some cables. So each summer we would transit to the Bering Sea (by ship) and conduct diving operations to fix damaged cables.
I have been around the world 3 times and Alaska is still the most breathtakingly beautiful place I have seen. Even after being in Hawaii. But, just like that show, the weather can turn from pretty to deadly in a matter of minutes.
