I dont know why you are minimizing preseason so much.
It is a great way to evaluate talent and implement new systems.
You have a point about Spurrier, but don't forget people had blinders on because of this "new offensive genius" who was going to light it up in the NFL.
The reality is he had the starters playing against 2nd and 3rd string....and that doesn't mean jack.
In comparison, look at last 2 years offensive struggles in preseason, particularly in the passing game. I was concerned then as I knew it was a matter of legitamate 1st string on 1st string struggles....and it translated to the seaason.
Many of us watch the preseason to evaluate talent and get a feel for how effective the new offense will be. At this point, I'd say I am optimistic.
I too am skeptical of pre-season but I dont discount it completely
