Totally agree.

The dispassionate mind is pretty rare. Your party affiliation should not be some badge of honor that you wear on your shirt sleeve to defend with all of your passion.

People get sucked in because they're too lazy to educate themselves... so they in turn look up to their political leaders to make their minds up for them.

I mean it makes sense the most basic level. A "Follow the leader" mindset makes sense to a voter that has to lead his or her own life, but doesn't have the time or the interest to invest in the affairs of our government. We're all guilty to some extent... just some (and I'm not pointing anyone out) are more obvious than others.

Plus... from a politicians standpoint... that's exactly what they want you to do. They want to activate the emotional circuits of your brain that inspire you to go out and vote. They want to give you an emotional attachment that drives you to the polls, which isn't necessarily a bad thing all the time.

If we lived in a world that was fully rational, we would be completely passive and inactive. No-one would react to any kind of crisis or alarm. It would just be a totally non-responsive or inclusive. It's a citizens duty to involve emotion into politics... but it's equally his or her duty to not get carried away with all the rhetorical bullshit that's out there.
