I doubt that Snyder hired Zorn just to buy a year until Cowher was ready for a couple of reasons.
1) Snyder is actually a fan of the team and I think he wants to see them do well, even if that means hiring a complete nobody who just happens to know how to win in the NFL.
2) If he did want Cowher next year wouldn't it make more sense to hire a short term coach who's ideas and schemes match Cowhers more closely? Why go from Al Saunders offense, to the West Coast, then back to a power running game/ball control scheme? If you did that you'd not only be throwing away this year, but you'd likely be throwing away the first year under Cowher while he gets everything in place.
3) Who's to say Cowher would actually come here next year, especially after it becomes clear that Snyder just goes through head coaches like they're nothing. (this one is hypothetical, assuming that Snyder were to fire Zorn after a year)
