A series of events took place after Gibbs was hired resulted in Lavar going out on a motorcycle that particular day which resulted in the injury that forced Lavar into early retirement. It is possible that if Gibbs wasn't hired Lavar never would have gone out that day and crashed.
Other then that I can't think of what Gibbs did to hurt Lavar. The universe works in mysterious ways
