Farraday must be from a different time or something so the rules on the island don't apply to him in the same fashion. My head hurts now. Anyways, what happens to Sawyer if Desmond answers the door? Or can it simply "NOT HAPPEN"? Like the universe will not allow it? Even though Desmond heard Sawyer banging on the door did the universe prevent Desmond from answering it? WTF?

Farraday did kind of explain it when was talking to Desmond. I think he told Desmond that he was special and unique, which was probably a result of turning the fail safe key. Remember, back on the boat with Penny Desmond said that it wasn't a dream but more like a memory.
It seems like some people, like Desmond, Farrady, the old woman, and possibly Richard Alpert are sort of immune to the effects of time skipping.
