For a long time, there were no teams south of DC along the eastern states. Actually, if you look at a map, there was a huge chunk of the country with no pro football for quite some time. The Jaguars and Panthers weren't around until '95, the Buccaneers didn't come around until '76, and prior to that, it was the Falcons and Dolphins in '66. So for quite a while it was just the Redskins south of the Mason-Dixon line.
