While Smith is definatly an upgrade from Plack. I dont think we should jump on him without exploring the possibility of signing Lechler. 53 spoke of both punters bringing stability and they would. But if you look at the stats for the last 4 years, its obvious Lechler sets the standard for stability while Smith is good he is up and down. I added Plack in just to show contrast.

Rankings............2005........2006........2007.. .......2008
Lechler................2nd............2nd......... 1st...........2nd
Smith..................5th............10th........ 21st.........12th
Plack...................---............4th..........32nd.........28th

Smith had a great 08 season but he has consistantly declined from 05 to 07 with a good showing for 08

Where Lechler has been in the top 2 for the last four seasons. While I would welcome Smith, Im not sure I would jump on him to fast if there is a chance to land Lechler
