Because of the tightness at first a core group will start seeing it from his point of view (this year it was several receivers and one or 2 defensive guys) and questioning the QB/Coach's commitment to winning (if they aren't getting him the ball they must not be committed to winning). and in the last year(s), his core group really starts to focus around him and his struggles. And by then the distraction is full blown. Also, in the final years the media acts as an enhancer and speeds up the process.
Of course that is just a guess and i could be way off base

I think your on the right track CRedskinsRule, But I think JJ also liked the idea of signing TO because of his character and helped fuel the flames. He enjoyed the attention TO brought to the Cowboys and has admitted the attention is good for the team. But because of the late season disaster. Which I blame entirely on Romo. He and his team used TO as a scapegoat. IMO.
Im quoting myself here from a earlier post:
Quote:
Owens caught more touchdown passes than any NFL receiver over the last three years and was a big part of Tony Romo's emergence from an unknown backup to a starlet-dating Pro Bowl quarterback with a $67 million contract.
The Romo-Owens relationship appeared to fray late this past season, with Owens upset about everything from game plans to pass distribution. He had 213 yards in one game, but cracked 100 yards in only one other game, the otherwise forgettable finale.
"I know it takes a lot of pressure off Romo," Hurd said. "A guy like him demands the ball and you want to get him the ball. Now he can look at all of us and see which one is open on any given play. ... I don't think that was a problem. That's just what could and might start happening."
Jones was slow to go along. Just a few weeks ago, he indicated Owens wasn't going anywhere and firmly said the idea of locker-room problems were "a figment of the result. You didn't hear about those things when we were winning."
Next year is Romo's turn if his play does'nt prove it was TO's fault. IMO

When Romo's teamates say now that TO is gone ''Now he can look at all of us and see which one is open on any given play. ...
I don't think that was a problem. That could and might start happening'' I think thats saying a lot about where the blame lands and how much confidence they have in Romo.
When JJ said "
You didn't hear about those things when we were winning" says a lot about how much of this BS about TO was manufactured by the media and guys on the team afraid of losing there jobs.
Cutting TO was the easy answer and everyone agrees with it. "OF COURSE"
I can be way off here. But probably not to far. IMO
