All those servings of food are nice to have around, but next to worthless if you don't have clean water.

Me, I just squirrel away things people will want if the lights go out and don't come back on: batteries, booze, bullets, soap, food, water, razor blades, heirloom seeds, petrol, oil, hand tools, penicillin, condoms, aspirin, and a host of other things I don't care to list. I use these things anway, so they'll not go to waste just sitting in my cupboard.
