The worst case of something like this happening was in 1950 - Uruguay playing Brazil in the World Cup Final at the Maracana in Rio. Brazil were the clear favorites and had already printed & produced millions of collectibles & memorabilia/paraphernalia.
Of course, Uruguay won in a shocker.
