Yeah at some point. I dont think when my grandmother (Grammy) fled Czechoslovakia she ever thought there would be a black (or communist! (j/k)) American president in her lifetime, at least 50 years ago.
I think the point SBXVII is making is that whenever you make a decision to hire someone it should be based solely on merit and skin color or sex (imagine a female coach, now that’s progressive!) shouldn’t play a part in that decision. The government is saying that it should. Things like the affirmative action or the Rooney Rule (not govt. right?) say hey race needs to be considered when making a hiring decision. I think in the case of affirmative action, when 2 equally qualified persons apply for a job where one is a white male and the other is not the person who is not has to get the job for certain size organizations. Obviously the Rooney Rule doesn’t go this far, but I guess other rules go further like many public colleges in their application decisions. So its just however you want to run your organization. That’s cool with me, its your organization.
I personally have no beef with the Rooney Rule, but like all the other rules it gives the impression (to some ignorant individuals) that minorities have to be given a shot because they cant make it on merit alone. If they just make the rules indifferent based on race, and say everyone had to be given a equal chance. So if the Rooney Rule said white males had to be interviewed also (which in this day-and-age wouldn’t change anything), it would remove a lot of the perceived notions that minorities cant get it done on their own, or all owners are raciest, or Danny Snyder has to get the biggest named coach before looking anywhere else first.
