As of right now, the only prototypical 3-4 player we've added to our defense is a NT who can't even pass a physical. we had a shortage of good linebackers when running the 4-3 - there's no way we can switch to the 3-4 without acquiring alot more talent. free agency is dwindling down. we only have 5 draft picks and, by all appearances, we won't be drafting anyone before the 4th round who doesnt play offense. there's plenty of time before our 53-man roster is finalized, but unless/until we do a significant overhaul of our defensive front 7, i think the chances are we'll be keeping a base 4-3 for another year.

Good analogy....plus the idea of moving players currently on the roster to positions they're not acquianted with is an experiment that's going to take time to materialize if at all. Players like Lorenzo Alexander, Andre Carter and Jeremy Jarmon are good players at the positions they play, but talk of moving them to the LB position requires more than just a notion. I agree with those who say personnel is the key to whether we switch to a 3-4 as the base defense.
It's good to see Shanahan is not giving up any definitive answers to the question, no need to give the opposition a head start in preperation.
