Yeah. The thing is, 98% of people going to the ballpark here in Philly just want to have a good time. The good stories get overshadowed by things like this. Remember last year when the Dad caught a foul ball, gave it to his two year old girl, and she threw it over the balcony? He hugged her and it was an aw that's sweet moment. But that kind of positive rep doesn't stick in the minds of the rest of the country.
It's the small percentage of morons, who are uneducated, come to get loaded, and do stupid things. They ruin it for the rest of us. I love the Phillies and love going to games, but if someone sitting near me is wasted and yelling obscenities, it really puts a damper on the experience.
I think there's something to Philly's bad rap, personally. It's true that Philadelphia has more morons than most cities. The stadium is located in South Philadelphia where there's a big macho, fighting mentality amongst the indigenous population. I don't mean to offend anyone by this, but Philly is also a blue collar town. That means you've got a higher % of uneducated people, and while not every blue collar person is an uneducated asshole, the % of assholes amongst the blue collar population is much higher than it is amongst the white collar population.
So Philly is indeed more likely to have morons at the games than cities like Washington DC. Philly's also not alone; Boston and New York get their share of idiots as well.
So I do understand where Philly gets the bad rap, it's accurate in some ways. But what sucks is when I get lumped in with these moron fans. I'm smart, educated, civil, well-behaved at games, and I just want to go and see my team play. No way do I want some idiot sitting near me who's going to yell obscenities and get blasted. I just want to enjoy the game.
And most people in the stadium are like me. That's why the idiot who barfed on the girl got punched in the face by a bystander. Most Philly fans are just like anyone else, just out to have a good time at the ballpark. It's the morons that ruin it for the rest of us, and unfortunately Philly has plenty of them.
