The Washington Redskins have been less than impressed with their pair of 2009 second-round wide receivers, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, based on their production so far. During training camp, however, Thomas has flashed enough improvement to seemingly secure his spot on the roster for 2010.
Kelly, however, has been battling injuries all camp, and Jason Reid of the Washington Post writes that he'll need to get on the field and impress coach Mike Shanahan in order to make the team's 53-man roster. Redskins' receivers coach Keenan McCardell said the following about Kelly's roster chances: "He's more than talented enough to be one of the 53," McCardell said. "He wouldn't have been a second-round pick if he didn't have that type of talent. You don't pass that type of talent in the draft. I just hope he comes back healthy soon and ready to go."
The Redskins could certainly use a healthy, productive Kelly to bolster their receiving corps, but the second-year pro might be running out of time to earn Shanahan's approval. The fact that electrifying rookie Brandon Banks is doing well as a kick returner this preseason could be hurting Kelly's roster chances.
