An offensive tackle protecting the blind side of your star quarterback can be very disruptive and Philip Rivers will miss his starting left tackle more than he'll miss Vincent Jackson. It's just one of those positions you need talent and adjusting can only do so much. In my opinion, besides the quarterack position, left tackle is the one position where you'll see the biggest drop off from starter to the backing him up.
