Well, they've built a bad team.
I'm not advocating for the firing of either, as I don't believe that firing Shanahan after one season could possibly lead to a better coach than Shanahan, nor do a believe that one offseason is enough to evaluate Bruce Allen.
I do think Shanahan was a poor hire at this point in his career. I thought that at the time we did it, and I thought it was a disastrous decision to let him hire his son as offensive coordinator. Who thought that could possibly work? His record with defensive coaches is...not good, though I think he brought some decent coaches in with him on his staff (McCardell, Spanos).
But I also believe you shouldn't compound a bad hiring with a worse firing. I think Shanahan needs to be accountable for what has gone wrong here that he had control over (the offense), and that he should have one more year to fix it. If we struggle again next year (or 2012, whenever we play football next), I think a termination is justified.
