I haven't been hooked on a NBA game since the glory days of NBA Live. Then again I haven't really been a fan of the NBA since the mid 90s so that could have something to do with it.
The one thing that bugs me about NBA, MLB, and NHL games is when they don't let you choose a shorter season in season mode. I'm always all about the season mode, but who has time for a 82 game season? And if you're going to just sim games, what's the point?
