Us good ole boys in the pickup trucks, most of them time escape unscathed. But keep in mind even in 4X4, i only go about 20 to 25 mph when its snowing, and even slower when it's like 6 inches or so, so i guess speed has alot to do with it.

Speed is always a factor.
4 wheel drive and all wheel drive help you get going, but they don't help you stop and steer any better.
Also, ABS makes your stops longer. Give yourself plenty of room to stop. Chances are, you won't stop nearly as quickly as you believe you will.
