Well, that's the thing -- we DID lose a whole lot on defense: Good performances from the players; namely Kedric Golston, Maake Kemoeatu, and Rocky McIntosh. Losing Landry didn't help matters this year, either.

And let's not make last year's D into the 2000 Ravens. Yes, they were good statistically, but not in terms of takeaways or stopping opponents when they absolutely had to. Some of the decline we've seen this year can be traced back to changes in scheme, and some mistakes with coaching, but by far I'd say it's performance related. The guys up front just aren't that good.
