Plus Directv does not offer local channels in my area so I would have to pay for local channel cable service. This makes the price tag higher than free or $335 for me.

I hear ya. Once you have it, it's hard to imagine going without it.
Just to note with the local channels, you can pick them up with a good ol' over the air antenna, in HD too. They can install it at the same time when they put in the dish.
