You make a good point, as does nonniey above. Obviously it is mistaken to argue, as others have done, that the al Qaeda problem is ONLY a result of US foreign policy. That is overly simplistic.
That said, there are reasons why al Qaeda is so fixated on attacking the USA rather than other "unIslamic" states such as, say for example, Uruguay. We have made foreign policy errors in the Muslim world going all the way back at least to the orchestrated overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran in 1953.
It is not just that we stand in the way of al Qaeda's unrealistic dream of a pan-Islamic empire because we are so powerful. We also have made some mistakes.
