Yeah when they jumped the register they instantly deserved a beat down. In that case self-defense is to incapacitate an assailant with appropriate force. With a metal rod? Not so sure...but I wasn't there. What other weapons did he have at his disposal? Where he enters jail land is when he doesn't stop and turns self-defense into uncontrolled rage.
