I doubt McQueary is a unique case, nor is his cowardice "special" to him. I would suspect most of the outraged wanting his head would have, given a purely "tabula rasa" state of mind prior to such an incident, behaved similarly. This is not to excuse McQueary, but to point out that the many talking heads crucifying him for his non-escalation of violence would likely not have resorted to violence in their own right, despite their own self-perceptions to the contrary.

Ritchie Reacts To Sandusky Scandal - ESPN Video - ESPN
Jon Ritchie gives a emotional breakdown of his relationship with Sandusky and even says that knowing Sandusky the way he did, he probably would have reacted the same way as McQueary initially due to the shock factor.
He then goes on to say that once it sunk it, that's when he would have taken it to the proper authorities or at least followed up once his superiors did nothing.
