The only thing we really know is that both got drafted first overall by awful teams and weren't good though two seasons. In Russell's case we know he regressed terribly in his third year and is now out of the league. That's the difference. The ending to Russell's story (I believe) has already been written.
Why was his race even mentioned? It's obvious from his weight and off-season habits he had no desire to get better at his craft. Three years after he was drafted #1, and he can't even sniff a chance at a roster spot even now at his young age. The below should give you some understanding on JR's character.
