I'll say this: trading a bunch of picks to draft a 22 year old quarterback isn't mortgaging the future. It's betting the future on a single entity.
Trading a ton of picks for a guy like 26 year old Jay Cutler or 31 year old Carson Palmer is mortgaging the future. But if you are going to develop the asset yourself, its not the same thing as trying to trade a ton of draft value for a "finished product" who is already making a ton of money.
It's scenarios like the second that fans who don't get it dream up. It's that kind of "we need to get a quarterback" discussion that makes actually tries to separate having a quarterback from winning games. Trading a bunch of picks for a higher pick is just what you do if you don't like your positioning in a draft.
