I agree with you 100%. Let the agent handle it. They think that they can use the offseason stuff as a bargaining chip. But it hurts their value in the eyes of the organization. I think it's more negative than positive in most cases for the player. It depends on the organization. Hines Ward is a stand up guy, and he can date my daughter if he would like.
