When I left the big M we use to track RevPAR (revenue per available room) and used this gauge how profitable your property was but the new trend was to calculate RevPAG (revenue per available guest). This would include your room rate and any other dollars you spent on outlets in the hotel. A business travel usually always rated out highest on RevPAG because they generally ate in the hotel and used things like WIFI for convenience factors.
It is why a lot of nicer hotels are on Expedia and stuff like that. Lets get them in the door and then see if we can make up the low room rental on amenities and outlets. Also understand a hotel room only has a shelf life of one night, I can never sell room 101 on 4/25/2012 ever again after tonight.
