They build from the ground up, with a consistent focus and scheme that doesn't change from year to year. Everyone is always looking for the next "great coach" when things don't work out in the short term. Well who is to say the next hire will be any more competent than the one that was just fired? And all you have accomplished by doing that if they new hire is not successful is blowing up any continuity the team had.

This team has been bad for a long time, with a ton of terrible personnel decisions by Cerrato. We aren't going to turn things around with a snap of the fingers folks. Shanahan has a winning pedigree, he just needs time to get the building blocks in place. Our defense is atrocious this year. That will obviously be addressed this off season. We have had a lot of injuries and have not had the depth to replace them, again due to poor personnel decisions of the past leaving huge holes in our roster. Everyone needs to chill the heck out and pull for the team to get pulled together, not pulled apart.
December 2010 called, it wants its argument back.
