Re: Should Mike Shanahan be fired?
Speaking for myself, I thought the Shanahan hire was terrific, and I was particularly pleased with Kyle coming as OC as I had read nothing but glowing reports about him. I didn't like the switch to the 3-4 nor Haslett to run it. I also didn't like Mike having total control of football operations as I read substantially more negatives than positive reviews. But take the good with the bad and go from there, which brings us to today.
The problem and main complaint I have is not so much Mike the Head Coach, but Mike the head of everything football related. Too many of the negative reviews have been verified, and I don't think the team can win with him in that role. At a minimum, I would like to see him lose power over football operations, and just be the Head Coach. Unfortunately, I don't see him giving that up at all, and that is the problem.
Shanahan was fired from Denver because he wielded too much power, was overbearing in personnel decisions, and took over every aspect of the organization to the point where everything was "Yes Sir". Irsay fired Polian this year for the same reason, he said that Bill just took over the entire organization. It was suffocating. Jerry Jones the same, he won't fire himself, and their team is a perennial shambles. Andy Reid and Bill Parcells became poor coaches when they became De Facto General Managers.
There are no checks and balances, it's Mike's way or the highway on most every single decision. The Head Coach cannot overcome the GM.
