Re: Should Mike Shanahan be fired?
In the current digital issue of Pro Football Weekly, they ran a short feature article on Shanahan and the Redskins' problems. The article states that had Shanahan known how bad his other 52 players were, he would not have made the deal for RGIII. PFW intimates that Shanahan did not expect that the Redskins draft picks (relinquished for Griffin) would be such quality picks. Had he known, the story contends, Shanahan would have never made the deal with St. Louis. Shanahan made the trade with St. Louis believing that his Redskins would be a contender right now!
I draw several conclusions from this story. The first is that RGIII notwitstanding, Shanahan is NOT a shrewd evaluator of football talent. Secondly, the Redskins could probably be 3-6 with a combination of Cousins & Grossman at QB; Shanahan has NOT wisely selected the players (and coaches) that are attempting to complement RGIII's skills, thus the on-field results are less than stellar even with Griffin running the offense. Third, I would say that even if there is but a shred of truth to the story, Shanahan has vastly underrated the Redskins' lack of talent and thus erred strategically in trading away such valuable draft picks. Finally, I would just say that if things are as bad as they seem right now, RGIII will be past his prime by the time the Shanaclan get things figured out -- if they ever do!
This seems like a simple case of the game passing-by a once outstanding football coach.
