I think it comes down to him learning how to go through progressions and realizing running is his absolutely last option and when he does sprint for the sideline. I love self-defeating arguments -- LOOK AT VICK!!! all that talent which is in a sense wasted because he doesn't play smart. If you're really a competitor, and not an imbecile, you realize that you would rather sacrifice some meaningless yards now for 5 more years of playing rather than get those yards and be out of the game much sooner than you would like. Is Tom Brady not competitive because he doesn't sacrifice his body in the same way?
