I don't think that he was trying to make everything "ok" with his apology. His words show that. It seems that he is expressing true remorse and repentance, which is something we can all appreciate. His attitude is much nobler than being unrepentant.
While I deeply abhor what he did and I think that no apology can make it "ok," we should respect the fact that he is publicly remorseful.
