DL is a tipping point kind of thing. If you just have 1 good guy, he gets doubled every play and no big deal. 2 good players, they can double both, but that puts the offense in a slightly worse position. 3 good players... they can't double up without allowing a huge advantage to the secondary. 4 good players... good luck.
It's possible he's benefitting from the other players around him a bit (increasing his perceived value), but a lot of winning came off of having a great DL, so I'd rather not mess with it. I'd take Payne over Wentz, and that leaves the team +7mill.
I don't think he's worth 18m a year (so get a team-friendlier deal done), but unless there's a better way to spend that money (like a superstar QB)... I assume the OT will be drafted and every year you see $1-2m OGs playing good ball, we just don't have them right now (so Payne shouldn't obstruct fixing the OL).
Also, still think too many people are jumping off the Chase Young train too early.
