I remember Theismann for Theismann, not for the number he wore. I remember what he did more than anything, won us our first SB. That's not going to change if someone wears his number.

Agreed. And it would be easy to identify other numbers that could be considered off limits -- Monk (81) and D. Green (28) immediately spring to mind for me. If Haskins wears #7, it won't change those memories of my childhood rooting for those teams one bit. I like the fact that his initial reaction was to say he'd need to talk to Mr. Theismann. I like that a lot and the respect it shows for the team's past.
