Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
I was thinking about how everyone was deadlocked on GW being the coach after Gibbs leaves. It was rumored that GW stayed with us because of that position. Now that Saunders is a part of the team, will he be competition with GW? And if there is potential competition, you think GW and Saunders get along? I pose this question because I feel Saunders will also steal some of the spotlight from GW. This is kinda a dumb question bc Saunders speciality is OC, but just a random concern that came to my mind.

I am chomping at the bit to see Saunders' offense but you have to go with Williams. I do not want to see "Ball coach" defense ever again.

actually when marvin lewis was here, our defense was pretty good. especially considering how much they were on the field

Re: Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
These guys are professionals. They know their roles, they're adults, so I don't think you'll see a Buddy Ryan vs. Kevin Gilbride type situation.
Certainly they'll both want the job once Gibbs decides to leave -- assuming they're still here when that happens. If Gregg Williams has another season of defensive success, say, top ten in the league, I don't see how another team doesn't finally relent and make him a head coaching offer he can't refuse. Barring a defensive collapse (perish the thought!), I just don't think there's any way possible Williams stays for his fourth year as defensive coordinator in '07. Saunders is probably going to be here longer anyway, I would think. Then again, if the Skins win the Super Bowl, all bets are off. Gibbs would probably call it quits, say the team is in good hands, and one of the two takes over as head coach. Somehow I doubt you'd see either of them as the top guy while the other says as assistant head coach/coordinator. That probably doesn't clear anything up, but I can tell you this for certain: A Joe Gibbs coached team will not have desention in the ranks of the coaching staff. |

No, I think GW is still Dan Snyder's guy. He gave him that $1 million clause in his contract for a reason. The clause says if GW is not the next head coach, he'll get a $1 million payment from Danny.

Please tell me that clause is null and void if Williams takes a head coaching position elsewhere. |

Re: Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
Williams has the edge because he was here first. As for Saunders no one really gave him a chance this past off season. I think owners are a little hesitant about Saunders ability to be a head coach and have type casted him into a offensive coordinator role. If Danny wants to keep both Williams and Saunders after Gibbs retires he'll have to digg deep down into his pockets.

Re: Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
Williams has been here longer, he's younger, and gibbs and snyder want him as the next head coach (because of the $1 million clause)
Williams and Saunders both said that they aren't going to leave...hopefully they weren't lying

I honestly don't even want to think about things beyond this year.

Re: Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
With Saunders and Williams getting paid the big bucks, as much or more than most the head coaches in the NFL, the title doesn't mean that much except for an insecure/selfish person.
With Williams already having some experience as head coach Bills, you have to give the nod to Williams. However, Saunders is deserving of a good title. |

Re: Al Saunder vs. Gregg Willams?
If gibbs does stay another year, which i think he will, i really don't think GW would leave. I can see saunders leaving for a HC position somewhere else but not GW. GW had his chance many a time. He chose to stay here when he would have gotten the chance to be a head coach. The clause garantees GW a job when gibbs leaves. I don't see any reason we would go over to Saunders if gibbs was to leave in the next two years. Only if the defense completely skrews up and pulls a below 20 ranking and we lose faith in GW. I don't see that happening.
