Watching the Skins overseas

It looks like I might be accepting a position in Japan for at least the next year. I know we have people on this site from all over the world. My question is, how difficult is it to watch the games overseas? Can you go to a bar typically? Is there anyway to get them over the net? This job I've been offered is hard to turn down, but I have to admit that next year's Skins team is a major factor for me potentially deciding to stay....sad but true.

Thanks guys.

If anything you can come back here and see if anyone knows where to find the full games available online or at least the highlights.

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

I would think they have some sort of cable set up to watch it over there, i mean we have packages to buy english premier soccer channells and all that nonsense, it would make sense, also weve played a couple of games and the nfl frequents japan, i would actually be surprised if they didnt have it, you might have to deal with japanese announcers but hey, listen to WJFK online during the skins game

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

slingbox is a box you hook up to your tv (cable/satellite/whatever) and to your network connection. After you hook it up in, say, D.C., you can watch local DC programming (local news, nats games, skins games, wizards, etc) anywhere in the world that has a internet connection (including japan, and everywhere else).

sold at best buy and just about everywhere else.

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

I have the same problem for the upcoming season, i am in Korea. Im in the military and we have Armed Forces Network (AFN) so i will not have my choice of games but i will be able to watch the games they program for that week. The worst thing is i have a 15 hour difference so when the games are starting at 1pm eastern it is 2am on Monday morning and i have to go to work the next day. I will also be going to school so it will be hard to get up early watch the game, go tto work and then go to school on mondays. If the Skins are playing ill have to do it. If you find a way to do get DirectTV let me know so i can do the same thing!

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

I have been reading about this slingbox thing and it sounds pretty cool. I have already have internet phone with a US number which allows people to call me and it is like i am in the states. Now with this Slingbox thing it would make it that much better. Being in the military isnt as hard as it used to be, thanks to technology!

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

If you keep a residence in the US (or have someone to host a DTV box) while you're in Japan, djnemo65, I would definitely get a Slingbox.

The costs involved would be the Slingbox hardware, DTV/cable service, internet service at host site, and internet service in Japan. So, you're looking at $100-$150/month + ~$200 (one time) for the Slingbox.

The most appealing part of this is that you would have all of your normal shows from the US available to you oversees. Don't forget about the time difference and miss a game, though. That's something I would do.

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

internet service is screwy cheap in big city japan... like 10-20$ for a 2gpbs (that's right, GB per second).

in korea i heard from a friend that they actually show every single nfl game twice in a week... I don't know where that was or where you are though, but that might also be worth looking into.

Thanks alot guys, this slingbox sounds like the way to go. I just can't imagine weekends without Penn State and Redskins games, and hopefully now I won't have to.

Re: Watching the Skins overseas

you'll need a good net connection (broadband, not dialup) where ever you're landing, but that' generally not a huge issue anymore.
