Tony McGee Reaction to Vikings Game

Tony McGee Reaction: Vikings @ Redskins

The first thing I was asked after the game was just my reaction to what I had seen, no suprised. You can talk alot about holding back your game plan, or only showing so much during the preseason. However, if you continue to do the same things wrong week in and week out, it goes towards a lot more than the gameplan. The penalties and missed tackles are a big problem too. The one "late hit" on Sean Taylor was bogus, however his reputation is going to follow him into games now and he is going to have to be more careful than others on the feild. In addition, if Carlos Rogers, who will really need to step up his game, didn't miss the tackle, Taylor would not have been in the position to get the late hit. The pass rush was not good enough to win the football game. It will be up to the line without the help of many blitzes to create pressure on the quarterback because when you have injuries to the secondary, you will not be able to bring the house like the Redskins like to do.

As a whole, offensivley, I saw alot of encouraing things as far as some of the screens and formations that I think we can build on. I thought that Mark Brunell played well enough to win the game, and did what was asked of him outside of the overthrown ball at the end of the game. I want to know where TJ Duckett was during the game. I thought Portis provided the spark the Redskins needed, but having Duckett in those short situations would have made a difference in the game. I think the offense sputtered, but at this point I expect it a little bit due to the new implementations and learning the system. Personally, I'm more worried about the defense.

When you look at John Hall, thats a kick that an NFL kicker needs to make down the stretch. At the same time, I can't completely blame Hall for that because its not a gimmie kick. This is a need that certianly should have addressed during the offseason. Its too harsh to say that he shouldt have a job with the Redskins because he is probaboly the best avalible kicker right now. I know Novack is still around, but he is really a 40 yard and under kicker. It's somthing that should have been addressed, but its a situation that will not get better this season.

Finally looking ahead to Dallas, the Redskins need to play a complete game to have a chance to win. What happened in Texas Stadium last year was a once in a generation type of thing and the Redskins will not get away with only playing 4 solid mintues. The key is pass rush as the Cowboys have a weaker offensive line and can be taken advantage of. At the same time, if the Redskins give Drew Bledsoe the type of time they gave Brad Johnson, the Skins' dont stand a chance. Terry Glenn and T.O. are much better recivers and can easily take advantage of the Redskins.

Thank you very much guys, I'll be back again next week to discuss the Cowboys game!

Tony McGee's NFL career started in 1971 where he was a starting defensive end for the Chicago Bears. In 1974, Tony began a 7 year stint with the New England Patriots and earned the nickname, "Mac the Sack." His unique ability to swarm opposing quarterbacks helped coin the phrase, "designated pass rusher." Tony's career as a Washington Redskin began in 1982, and included a Super Bowl championship. Tony ended his spectacular career in 1985 with 106 career sacks and played in over 200 games -- a feat achieved only by a select group of NFL defensive linemen.

Re: Tony McGee Reaction to Vikings Game

Hey guys,

Just wanted to apologize for not getting a ton of questions in and using mostly my own. Traveling home from the game and having to do the interview on the ride was hard; but i'll get everyones in next week.

Thanks.

I agree with everything he says, especially these points:
"if the Redskins give Drew Bledsoe the type of time they gave Brad Johnson, the Skins' dont stand a chance. Terry Glenn and T.O. are much better recivers and can easily take advantage of the Redskins. "

"When you look at John Hall, thats a kick that an NFL kicker needs to make down the stretch. At the same time, I can't completely blame Hall for that because its not a gimmie kick. This is a need that certianly should have addressed during the offseason"

Re: Tony McGee Reaction to Vikings Game

Several good points that were well made. I might have to challenge the part of a 40 yarder being a gimme. In the NFL the quality of kicker I think you need should be able to make a 40 to 49 yard field goal with some regular consistency. I just dont know if I want to put the game in the hands of John Hall. I think maybe a little kicker competition might light a fire under him or maybe give him the motivation to seek consistency. But on another note....BEAT DALLAS. I think our defensive line is the key to winning sunday and without getting to Bledsoe early and often I think we might be in for a long night with our suspect secondary. I sure hope Springs is capable of returning this weekend although i hear that is a long shot. I sure do miss his coverage skills.

Re: Tony McGee Reaction to Vikings Game

the point i meant to make was that it should be a gimme for a NFL kicker. If you cant make a 40 to 49 yard field goal in this league lets find someone who can.
