Did J. McDaniels call a poor game?
I don't like to blame poor performances on coordinators too much, because often it's poor execution that fails a team not the play call.
That said, I couldn't help but think that last night Josh McDaniels & the offensive staff didn't adjust well at all to the Giants' pass rush. They started the game having some success w/Maroney, but then started throwing deep a lot. I don't know if you put that on the play caller or Brady. When they went to the short stuff to Welker & Faulk they had success. I know it looked like McDaniels was no longer a candidate for the Skins job, but I think if he were, his stock took a major nosedive last night. Anyone else see it that way? |

I was surprised how long it took for the Pats to adjust. Maybe it's their arrogance, or maybe the Giants were just that good.

His performance in one game should not remove him from consideration. If you're only factoring their coaching scheme from one game then you would be entirely shortsighted.
I personally wouldn't want him as HC. He should get some more experience before being considered as a HC candidate anywhere.

Re: Did J. McDaniels call a poor game?
I think that McDaniel/Brady were too worried about getting Moss involved early. The Giants all but took that option away, and with the outstanding pass rush, Welker became the obvious option, which Brady exploited well on his go ahead 4th quarter drive. I would blame the Pats O-line far more than McDaniel. They were dominated in the trenches.

I don't think he called a bad game. They just should've kept more guys in the block. I don't think I've ever seen Matt Light play as bad as he did last night. They should have given him some help. Same with the RT. Strahan was just bulldozing him every single pass play.

I couldn't agree more. I expected more screens and more short stuff. They let the QB get hit and his performance suffered as a result.

Well didn't the starting RT or guard for the Pats go out in the first quarter?

Re: Did J. McDaniels call a poor game?
I was thinking all they needed to do was throw a couple of screens to stop that pass rush. I remember a couple of years ago when the Pats played the Eagles in the SB. The Eagles were all over Brady the whole first quarter and to slow down the pass rush the ran 3 consecutive screens to Dillon. For the rest of the game the Eagles thought twice about bringng pressure.

I'd say give all the credit to the Giants "D". I was really surprised the Patriots didn't adjust like they have all season.

Re: Did J. McDaniels call a poor game?
That was one of the worst offensive strategies in recent memory. It was clear after the second series that the Pats front 5 couldn't handle the Giants pass rush straight up, thereby making impossible to run the deep attack kind of game they had in mind...yet they continued to stick with 7 step drop-backs, as the already injured qb continued to get pummeled. It wasn't until their second to last drive that they finally adjusted, switching to one and three step drops with quicker slant and screen routes. Why did it take an entire game to make that adjustment? How do coaching geniuses go into a second half after being shut down in the first and say, well, let's just keep doing what we're doing?
And BTW, who was the last team to dominate the Giants. That would be the Redskins, who neutralized the Giants' pass rush by running the same delayed hand-off over and over again, to great effect. Didn't they see that video? They should have watched it. I watched it! |
