puppy help

My wife put a deposit on a boxer puppy, but its all the way in tx, and wont be ready for a while, so Ive decided to look locally. Ive done a few searches on google (I'm not paying to sign up for a site to locate a puppy) and am having trouble finding many local breeders. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with local (northern va, or dc area) boxer breeders that you may recommend, or if you know of a comprehensive, yet free site to search...

Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten.

The first site, I'm not sure if it's free but the second site I know is free. Also not sure if you're looking for a purebred or just a boxer that may/may not have mixed lineage.

You might get lucky and find a purebred or an actual puppy on the adoption sites, but I can't say for sure. I may actually able give you names, addresses and numbers of boxer breeders, if there are any in the area, but would not be able to do so until Thursday (its the next time I work. :P)

I got mine from an Amish Farm up here in Central PA. Best dog I've ever owned. And you get all of the papers which prove he's a pure breed. You also pay about $300 less than a typical breeder. It's probably a long drive to save some money but I would still highly recommend it.

I'm definitely looking for a pure bred dog. I love their temperament, and they're often mixed with pits, which I'm not taking a chance on with kids. I don't need papers if the parents are on premises and registered, if it saves money, and I'm looking for a pet, not a dog for breeding...

I know y'all have heard it already, but I got my dog at the pound and she is fantastic. Part border collie, part lab. Sweet, calm, smart, fun. And she was days from being killed.

There are so many good dogs waiting there for free. Be sure to know what to look for in temperament--there are specific things to look for--and you can get a great dog, saving you lots of money and the saving the dog his or her life.

Speech over. Boxers are awesome, don't get me wrong.

Another good point about the farm raised thing.... Amish Families always have tons of kids around, so from the time the puppy is born, it's got 5-10 kids handling it. Gives them a great disposition, in my opinion.

Good call on the Pound Puppy. There are some great Purebreds in the pound. They would be greatful to you for rescuing them from that environment! Me to, speech over.
If that does not work for you, don't price shop toooo much. NO cheap puppy mills. AKC is a good reference as to who has what in your area. Not cheap, but good quality dogs.
Lastly, I have a boxer (among others). BEST dog we have ever had. TERRIBLE watch dog. She does not alert you when people come to the house. My wifes 3 pound poodle has that duty.
NOTE: They are TERRIBLE weasels, and will try to get extra........everything a little at a time. GOOD LUCK

While I agree with the pound puppy and that option, Central PA is not far at all from the DC area. I used to drive to all the home Skins games from Central PA :-)

the one issue you have to watch out for with the Amish is inner breeding. i have had both pure bred, and mutts, and the pound dogs are BY FAR the better of the two. and by going that route, you saved a dog from euthanasia. not to mention the money you will save

Great post, I was going to say essentially the same thing. While I understand anyone who wants a purebred, but if you just want a dog, ALWAYS ADOPT!!!

I agree with the pound idea. I foster greyhounds, actually, and help find them homes. We adopted a few in the past, but they live with my mother in law (she fell in love with them when we were staying at their house). I fully support saving animals, but in this case I want a purebred boxer. I had one when I was younger and he was more of a friend than a pet. I've never had a dog that was that personable, and I want to give that to my kids (and myself again as well).

I got my dog from a farm breeder in Central PA too and it's been completely healthy and a GREAT dog for 5+ years now.

However, with the Amish, you have to watch out for puppy mills. The Amish are notorious for this and you should NEVER give money to one of these kinds of breeders. Aside from health issues, they treat the dogs doing the breeding horribly, like machines instead of living creatures.

Everyone should ALWAYS do their homework before buying from any breeder and should NEVER buy from a pet shop. Pet shops keep the puppy mills in business and you'll way overpay for a possibly unhealthy dog anyways.

Good point about the puppy mills. No, in our case it's a family raised type of atmosphere. I really think that had a lot to do with our dog's personality.
