"I think Fred Smoot is doing an excellent job, technique-wise, getting back to where he was when he was drafted out of Mississippi State." "Another guy I think is going to surprise a lot of people is going to be Justin Tryon. I'm gonna tell you, he is going to be really, really good in this league. And I think he's going to be good for a long time." I love to hear stuff like this.

I'd say safety is one of our strongest positions. Good competition back there.

Loyal readers of the Warpath knew a few months ago that Tryon is someone that was impressing the coaches, though it didn't show clearly to the fans

It's easy to crush guys when they make rookie mistakes and then write them off for good. But it just takes one look around the league and you see how many guys took a few years to develop, and once they did they became very good players.

Hopefully Tryon and the rest of that draft class develops into something - let's give them a chance.

Yeah my buddy who works at Redskins Park said Tryon is by far the best physical specimen of all the CBs. That's part of the reason I suggested last year that we try him on punt returns (anything beats ARE's sideline to sideline dance routine). Obviously Tryon was lacking in technique and experience, but I think we'll see some big strides from him this year. I sure hope so anyway.

Indeed, it's not like he was a top 10 pick, he's gonna take a bit more coaching and learning.

Re: Jerry Gray Talks Coaching Cornerbacks...

With DHall locked in for life, Barnes and Tryon under team control both through at least 2011, I'm wondering what the chances are that the Redskins just franchise Carlos Rogers for next year in lieu of actually trying to come to a deal with him, and then let him go wherever he wants in 2011. I mean, the success of that plan seems contingent on either Hall, Barnes, or Tryon unexpectedly becoming a No. 1 CB, but I wouldn't have even thought that option possible just 3 months ago.

I'm looking forward to training camp/preseason, can't wait to see how he progresses.

I would think if Rogers doesn't play to a pro bowl level, that could be a real possibility. Especially with the way Tryon seems to be thought of. I know it's OTA's and they don't mean much but Barnes has 3 INT's in the last 2 practices. I think they're looking for Rogers to have a really good year and they like having more than 2 really good corners, but if Tryon keeps improving and Barnes has some ball catching skills, Rogers could become expendable. He could sure use some INT's this year when the opportunity arises. With the addition of AH and Orakpo, the D backfield should look pretty good this year.

Re: Jerry Gray Talks Coaching Cornerbacks...

I most certainly hope Redskins doesn't let Rogers walk, unless he have had a lousy year this season then I would understand the difficulty of resigning him.. But I read in somewhere, an article; every DB that has been taught by Jackson goes into their 4th year, they become pro bowlers.. I hope this will be same for Rogers, I really do believe he can be great CB if given right opportunities.. Rogers even rosed out and showed his toughness last year with few hard hits, unlike his first two years..

His stone hands is another reason for not to sign him, but it doesn't matter at all if he could shut down #1 receivers..

He has certainly improved and should have a great year. We'll see.
