Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

GTripp’s favorite thread of the year. Now that the draft is complete, it’s the annual Predict the 2009 Opening Day Redskins Roster Thread!!!!

Here’s mine (starters in bold)

QB: Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan (that’s right I’m bumping him up to backup), Todd Collins

OL: Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen, Edwin Williams, Stephon Heyer (both are starting by week 10), Chad Rinehart, Ruben Riley, Pete Kendall (I say he returns, just a guess)

WR: Santana Moss, Malcolm Kelly (wishful thinking perhaps), Devin Thomas, Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash (I think he stays one more year)

RB: Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Anthony Alridge, Rock Cartwright (CFL’s Domonique Dorsey doesn’t make the cut)

FB: Mike Sellers, Eddie Williams

TE: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis

DE: Philip Daniels, Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, Alex Buzbee, Renaldo Wynn (Rob Jackson is a difficult last minute cut as the Redskins decide to keep Wynn)

DT: Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery, Lorenzo Alexander

LB: Robert Thomas, London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Chris Wilson (Alfred Fincher is surprisingly let go)

CB: Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

S: Kareem Moore, Laron Landry (yeah I’ve got Moore starting), Chris Horton, Reed Doughty

K: Dave Rayner (in a preseason battle, he ekes out Suisham)

P: Hunter Smith

LS: Ethan Albright

Practice Squad: Marko Mitchell, Cody Glenn, Tyson Smith, Devin Clark, D’Anthony Batiste, Robert Agnone, some other dude, one more dude

I think that is a good-looking list. However, why is Kareem Moore starting, not Horton? And wouldn't Smoot still be the #3 CB, with Barnes moving into the nickel spot later on? Just asking for reasoning.

This is just a hope but I hope that right now Orakpo is stuffing his face with cheeseburgers so that he can start on opening day.

Just trying to keep it interesting with Moore...and yeah I think Barnes will pass Smoot rather quickly on the depth chart

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

Specifically per the LB corp, it looks weak to me...very weak. Thomas will be a terrible SLB in our division if that's where you've got him. Otherwise i guess it's Rocky @ SLB and i think he's a liability too. Thomas starting just spells bad news IMO. We should get Marcus back to start @ SLB or even invest in someone new from FA.

Landry will disappoint at SS. He's not a great tackler at this point...his skill oriented toward centerfield and he could have a pro-bowl season at FS.

No further upgrade along the OL? In fact it looks like we're not doing anything more in FA period? I don't get it.

I thought I was the only one who had faith in Moore.

I agree with what you say about our LB's. If we don't sign someone else, maybe we can hide their weaknesses in a sandwich between our beefed-up line and capable secondary. As for MW, all we need is for him to sign on the dotted line and maybe our draftees will motivate him to do that.

As for the OL, I think the idea of this thread was to create a lineup from guys we have now without future speculation. But you are correct IMO and RT especially looks ugly.

A couple of years ago I think. Last year I took some gambles (Eric Shelton at RB) and I was wrong.

You can speculate, I mean I speculated about Kendall coming back. But the current roster should be the foundation for your prediction. And this isn't about what you'd like the roster to be on opening day. It's what you think it should be. So you can want our starting LBs to be Leroy Hill, Larry Foote, and Marcus Washington...but do you think that would really happen?

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

Love these threads. Key moves:

- Thrash loses to Marko Mitchell in camp
- Alfred Fincher beats Cody Glenn in camp
- Devin Clark loses a close one to Edwin Williams for the last OL spot
- Justin Tryon sticks for reasons none of us can fathom. But I can easily see them keeping Byron Westbrook instead.

QB: Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan

OL: Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Edwin Williams, Jon Jansen, Chad Rinehart

WR: Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Marko Mitchell

RB: Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright

FB: Mike Sellers, Eddie Williams

TE: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Todd Yoder

DE: Philip Daniels, Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, Rob Jackson, Renaldo Wynn

DT: Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery, Lorenzo Alexander

LB: Robert Thomas, London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Chris Wilson, Robert Henson, Alfred Fincher

CB: Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

S: Laron Landry, Chris Horton, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty

K: Shaun Suisham

P: Hunter Smith

LS: Ethan Albright

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

Here’s mine:

QB: Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan, Todd Collins

OL: Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Jon Jansen, Devin Clark, Edwin Williams, Chad Rinehart, D’Anthony Batiste (I know its wishful thinking for all these young guys to make the roster, but I’m hoping last year taught Zorn a lesson – you can’t stash really promising young OL on the PS or they will get snatched up Also, with so many age/injury concerns with our O-line, we’re going 10 OL this year instead of 9).

WR: Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Antwaan Randle El, Malcom Kelly, Marko Mitchell (I’m pretty confident about Thomas starting and Marko making the squad is probably wishful thinking, but allegedly he’s a pimp on special teams so he could replace Thrash this year if he makes some nice hits in the preseason)

RB: Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Anthony Alridge (I think this is the year we cut Rock. I am sad.)

FB: Mike Sellers

TE: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Devin Frischknecht (Yoders done. The fact that we spent a draft pick on Williams might prompt him to get the job ahead of Frisch or Agnone, but one of these three will be replacing Yoder this year)

DE: Philip Daniels, Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, Rob Jackson (I think we only go with 9 DL this year as we have a number of guys who can play inside or outside. Blache may push hard to keep Wynn but it won’t come at Jackson’s expense [he’s Daniels run-stuffing replacement in ’10]).

DT: Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery, Lorenzo Alexander.

LB: Marcus Washington, London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Robert Thomas, Cody Glenn, Alfred Fincher (i think we resign Washington and one of our rookie LBs makes the active roster. I think Fincher beats out Wilson for the final spot.)

CB: Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

S: Kareem Moore, Laron Landry, Chris Horton, Reed Doughty

K: Shuan Suisham

P: Hunter Smith

LS: Ethan Albright

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

I think they are going to use the kick off return specialist they picked up from the Canadian league. I saw his highlights, runs like sprolls or however you spell his last name. Looks pretty good. He finds good holes and makes people miss because he is really short and fast.

I was going to say it's my favorite thread of the year, but apparently, I wasn't the first person to think that

Quarterbacks (3): Jason Campbell, Byron Leftwich, Colt Brennan

Running Backs (4): Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, DeDe Dorsey, Rock Cartwright

Fullbacks (1): Mike Sellers

Wide Receivers (5): Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Malcolm Kelly, James Thrash, Devin Thomas

Tight Ends (2): Chris Cooley, Fred Davis

Offensive Tackles (3): Chris Samuels, Stephon Heyer, Jon Jansen

Offensive Guards (5): Randy Thomas, Derrick Dockery, Pete Kendall, Chad Rinehart, Devin Clark

Centers (2): Casey Rabach, Edwin Williams

Defensive Ends (6): Andre Carter, Phillip Daniels, Renaldo Wynn, Brian Orakpo, Rob Jackson, Lorenzo Alexander

Defensive Tackles (4): Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston (think he could get traded still, which moves Alexander back inside)

Linebackers (6): London Fletcher, Alfred Fincher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Cody Glenn, Robert Henson

Cornerbacks (5): Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

Safties (4): LaRon Landry, Chris Horton, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty

Long Snappers (1): Ethan Albright

Kickers (1): Shaun Suisham

Punters (1): Hunter Smith

Practice Squad (8): Eddie Williams, Marko Mitchell, Chase Daniel, Anthony Alridge, Brian Burley, Robbie Agnone, Derek Walker, Ronnie Palmer

I also predict we sign Mike Brown, and he's a surprise cut after the preseason.

Prediction 2: If Smoot gets cut in the preseason, then Barnes is starting alongside Rogers by midseason.
