Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
Did Vermeil have anything to do with Saunders coming to DC w/ Gibbs? Or was he teary eyed over a drip in a clear coat on the armrest of his outdoor rocker?

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
lux,i think at saunders age he probably knows what he wants and looks at this as a challenge to get the skins to the super bowl.does anyone know if he had worked with coach gibbs before?i think i read somewhere that they were together back in the early 70's at usc or somewhere.

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
I think that money had a lot to do with it. The head coaching job everyone had Saunders linked to was Oakland - Al Davis is crazy, sexy cheap. He hires retreads and unproven coordinators, because they don't cost a lot. Saunders is one of the, if not the, best paid offensive coordinators in football now, and is most assuredly making more than half the head coaches in the league. It is unlikely he would be making as much as a head coach - especially given that his own head coaching experience (San Diego 1986-88, 17-22) was so long ago with limited success.
This coaching staff, this roster - all of the efforts the franchise are putting forth are aimed towards reaching the Super Bowl. This is a shot at the ultimate prize, and a shot he wouldn't have as a head coach of any of the teams that were hiring for head positions last year.

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
He probably understands that he will be a co-head coach/offensive coordinator after Gibbs retires and G. Williams takes over the head position. If he has a successful year and the offense thrives, he can write his own ticket. Maybe Vermeil saw this too.

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
he came here because he was passed over in KC for the HC job and we offered lots of money. I don't really think there's much more to it, except the chance to win a super bowl (which has a way of getting coaches paid) and a small chance for the HC job here since gibbs isn't going to be around forever (though HC jobs are ALWAYS available, they're rarely available for good teams).

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
I don't think there was much to it. He is going to make a lot of money, add to his resume with a 2007 Super Bowl victory and wait for the right head coaching situation to fall into his lap.

Re: Did Vermeil influence Saunders?
I like Al Saunders, a lot, I liked him before he got here. And I think offensive scheme is a great conversation topic. But these Saunders threads are getting as old as the Lavar ones, correct me if I'm wrong.
