Clinton Portis Plays Football Too

This news has sort of fallen under the radar considering his off-the-field dogfighting comments and news (great news) of Campbell and Rocky's progress.

Still, one of the best pieces of news from mini-camp (in my opinion) was the participation of Clinton Portis in some drills, looks like CP might be ahead of schedule. Granted, it was fairly light work but I still think it's a great sign, Without him our offense can be very good. With him, it can be record-breaking.

Three miss time, but Portis returns - Sports - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Quote:
Portis, on the other hand, wasn't expected to practice until training camp in late July, but took a fair amount of work yesterday.

"I was out running around before practice and after I did that, I asked [running backs coach Earnest Byner] if I could do anything and he was like, 'See how it feels,' " said Portis, who had been out a month with a sore knee. I just wanted to see where I was and I was able to do a lot. I got in the passing drills and that went well so I tried to see what I could do during practice.

"To be part of the team and actually involved, it felt good," Portis said. "My knee held up. My feet are on fire from wearing cleats for the first time. Outside of that, I felt good. I know my feet will be on fire tomorrow. I made it safely today. We'll see what I can do tomorrow, but I'm going to try to stay away from contact. I'm not going to push the limits. Whatever I get done will be extra."

Gibbs was pleasantly surprised by the return of his No. 1 back, who missed half of 2006 with shoulder and hand injuries.

"We knew we were getting close so we kind of left it up to Clinton and the trainers," Gibbs said. It was good he was able to take some work today. He looked good."

Re: Clinton Portis Plays Football Too

Who's Clinton Portis? is he on the team? His name sounds vaguely familiar, did he do something for us in the past? Either way with the depth we have at running back he's probably gonna be a long shot to make the roster.

In all seriousness though, I'm glad he's getting healthy again. We're more explosive on offense when he's in the game. Hopefully he'll be good to go soon.

Yeah good to hear he's getting back on track. A healthy CP will mean big time production from this offense.

I don't about us having a record breaking offense, but w/out question we are a better team with CP on the field. I hope Al S. comes up with some packages where both Betts and CP and on the field at the same time.

Record breaking? Last time I checked the Redskins had a rookie QB. Hopefully JC can pass a little to open up the running game.

Re: Clinton Portis Plays Football Too

3rd year QB = rookie?

Not sure I'm understanding that math.

Campbell has been recognized as having one of the best off-seasons of any Redskin. ESPN has also been buzzing about his work ethic and vast improvements in just one offseason as starter. Why are you even a Redskin fan with such a bad attitude towards the team?

You seem more like an Eagles guy to me.

Re: Clinton Portis Plays Football Too

Campbell is still a bit green no doubt, but he should be vastly improved over last year. He should hit the ground running this year.

Last I checked Campbell had started more games than Kurt Warner had when he led the Rams to a record breaking offensive season.

Re: Clinton Portis Plays Football Too

Good to think Portis is going to be healthy and ready to go come training camp. I hear Al Saunders is trying to devise situations where he can get Portis & Betts in the backfield at the same time. (Going to be interesting to see what the formation is going to look like with the other skilled players)

Betts has also said he's trying to work on his game in the open field. He want's to work on that extra move that will enable him to elude that one defender that's been keeping him from breaking more long runs and taking it to the house. Baring injury, the duo should be interesting to watch.
